The White House announced on Friday that the FBI had returned boxes of documents to former President Donald Trump following a search of his Florida property for classified materials that occurred after he left office. Trump celebrated the return of the boxes, claiming that justice had been served and that the investigation was merely an attack on him as a political opponent. White House staffers were seen loading roughly 15 boxes onto Air Force One to be transported to Florida. The White House communications director stated that the FBI was returning the President’s property that was taken during what they deemed to be unlawful raids. Counselor to the president, Alina Habba, criticized the special counsel who had probed Trump’s handling of classified documents and insisted that the return of the boxes was necessary. She mentioned that the items in the boxes belonged to President Trump and needed to be returned to him, but did not specify their contents.
Trump had been charged in 2023 with willfully retaining national defense information, making false statements, and conspiring to obstruct justice. A federal judge dismissed the case after finding that the investigation had violated the law. Trump’s co-defendants in the case also had their charges dropped last month. The Justice Department had dropped the case against Trump after he won the presidential election, citing a policy against prosecuting sitting presidents. The White House indicated that no changes in storage protocols were being made following the FBI search and seizure of classified materials from Trump’s property in 2022.
