Trump-appointed U.S. attorney in Washington demotes Jan. 6 prosecutors

Several top prosecutors in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, including those involved in January 6 prosecutions, were demoted to entry-level positions by interim U.S. attorney Ed Martin, a conservative activist without prosecutorial experience. This demotion involved handling misdemeanor cases or lower-level local cases, including the lead prosecutors on high-profile cases such as the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys seditious conspiracy cases. The Capitol Siege Section chief was also demoted, and the entire section was disbanded after Trump pardoned over 1,500 defendants. This move was seen as a “f— you” by law enforcement sources, as many of the demoted supervisors started out working misdemeanor cases as junior prosecutors. Former Assistant U.S. Attorney Brendan Ballou praised Greg Rosen, who was in charge of the Capitol Siege Section, as the best boss and team leader he had seen, and criticized Martin’s actions as small-minded.

The demotions are significant given the dual jurisdiction of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, which handles both federal and local crimes. The demotions have raised concerns about the direction of the office under Martin’s leadership and the impact on ongoing prosecutions related to the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol. Martin has been nominated to take over the position permanently, prompting further questions about the future of the office and its prosecution priorities.
