Other Celebrities Banned from The Oscars Besides Will Smith – TV & Film

The 97th Academy Awards are set to take place on Monday, featuring Emilia Pérez, The Brutalist, and Wicked leading with 33 nominations combined. Hosted by Conan O’Brien, Coralie Fargeat is the sole woman competing for Best Directing with The Substance, and Timotheé Chalamet aims to repeat his SAG Award win for Best Actor in A Complete Unknown. Among attendees like Cynthia Erivo and Sebastian Stan, notable absences include Will Smith, Bill Cosby, and Roman Polanski, banned from the ceremony for various reasons.

Richard Gere, Carmine Caridi, Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Roman Polanski, and Adam Kimmel are all previous Academy members expelled for reasons ranging from political statements to sexual assault convictions. Weinstein, 72, faced expulsion in 2017 for numerous allegations, leading to a 23-year jail sentence in 2020. Cosby, 87, was expelled in 2018 following a sexual assault conviction that was later overturned. Polanski, 91, was ousted the same year for unlawful sex with a minor, and Kimmel, a registered sex offender, was expelled in 2021.

In 2021, Will Smith was banned for a decade after slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars, overshadowing the event. Smith expressed regret and acknowledged the consequences of his actions. The Academy praised Rock for his composure. These exclusions reflect the Academy’s commitment to ethical standards and values, including respect for human dignity, as they prepare for the upcoming awards ceremony.
