Rudy Giuliani settles defamation case with ex-Georgia election workers

Former New York City Mayor and attorney Rudy Giuliani has satisfied a judgment against him after defaming two former Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and her daughter Wandrea “Shaye” Moss, by falsely accusing them of election fraud in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election. Giuliani reached a settlement agreement with the women in January following a jury award of $148 million in damages, which was later reduced to $146 million by a judge. The judgment was satisfied on Friday, with additional fees and interest included in the payment.

Giuliani had been found in contempt of court for failing to comply with orders related to the judgment, with a federal judge criticizing his reasons for not providing requested information about his assets as “farcical.” Giuliani had baselessly accused the women of fraud following the 2020 election that former President Trump lost.

Freeman and Moss sued Giuliani for defamation, stating that his false statements led to death threats and online harassment from Trump supporters. They expressed relief at finally clearing their names and reputations with the settlement agreement reached in January. Freeman described the past four years as a “living nightmare,” while Moss said the lies had majorly impacted her life. The women had testified before Congress about the harassment they faced due to the false accusations made by Giuliani.
