Arkansas’ Tourism Industry Thriving and Focused on Outdoor Recreation
Arkansas is becoming a prime destination for travelers, with 50.7 million people visiting the state last year and spending $9.9 billion. The tourism industry is the state’s second largest, and it continues to set new records every month.
The driving force behind Arkansas’ tourism efforts is outdoor recreation, with Gov. Sarah Sanders pushing to establish the state as a leader in the industry. Arkansas boasts approximately 1,000 outdoor companies, employing 40,000 people and generating $4.5 billion for the economy.
The Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism is spearheading projects, including the development of new trail systems in Mena and Bella Vista, and expanding the Delta Heritage Trail in Helena. These initiatives, along with the state’s top-rated park system, have earned Arkansas the title of “America’s New Adventure Hub.”
Arkansas State Parks welcomed over 8.5 million visitors in 2023, generating $35.8 million in operating revenues. The department invested $26.7 million in capital improvements in 2024, with projects including new mountain bike trails, campground renovations, and lodge upgrades.
Despite the growth in tourism, Arkansas remains committed to preserving its natural resources. Secretary Shea Lewis emphasizes the importance of protecting and conserving the state’s resources while promoting outdoor recreation.
As Arkansas continues to develop as a national leader in outdoor recreation, the state offers a wide array of activities for adventure seekers and leisure travelers alike. Arkansas is open for business, inviting more people to enjoy the beauty and excitement of the Natural State.
