A couple from Bend, Oregon, Terance Olaf Skjersaa, 57, and Susan Renee Skjersaa, 52, were identified as the victims of an avalanche in central Oregon. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of backcountry skiers buried beneath the snow in an area known as “Happy Valley.” Their friends reported them missing after they failed to return from their outing, and the couple was found dead by friends just before midnight. The sheriff expressed his sadness over the loss of the couple and emphasized the need for caution in the area due to moderate to considerable avalanche danger. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with backcountry recreation and the importance of being prepared and aware of conditions.Officials encourage the public to take extreme caution when recreating in the Central Cascades region, where the avalanche occurred, to prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future.
