Trump administration revokes approval of New York City congestion pricing

President Donald Trump celebrated the potential end of New York’s congestion pricing system, declaring himself “king” in a social media post. The federal government, led by U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, argued that the tolls posed an unfair burden on motorists outside the city and announced plans to nix federal approval of the system. New York Governor Kathy Hochul defiantly insisted that the tolls will remain in place despite the administration’s efforts to end them. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) also plans to fight any federal attempts to stop the tolls, arguing that congestion pricing has proven to be beneficial for the city, attracting more visitors and improving traffic flow.

Some leaders outside Manhattan, such as U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, praised the Trump administration’s efforts to end congestion pricing, claiming it unfairly taxed drivers from their states. Hochul mocked this argument, pointing out that New York doesn’t have a problem with New Jersey hosting New York sports teams in East Rutherford. She emphasized that New York should not have to bow down to the will of other states and defended the congestion pricing system as a way to improve the city’s economy and traffic conditions. The feud between the federal government and New York over congestion pricing continues, with both sides standing their ground on the issue.
