Southern Miss defeats Mississippi State 3-0 at Pete Taylor Park

Southern Miss Athletics had a strong showing against Mississippi State, securing a 3-0 shutout victory at Pete Taylor Park/ Hill Denson Field. Joey Urban led the way with three hits, including a homer, while the pitching staff held the Bulldogs to just four hits. This win marks the first 5-0 start for the Golden Eagles since 2016 and the first shutout of Mississippi State since 2019.

The game started off strong for Southern Miss, as they took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning without a hit. Urban’s homer in the second inning added to the lead, and a series of errors by Mississippi State allowed the Golden Eagles to score two more runs.

Pitchers Colby Allen, Cal Culpepper, Josh Och, and Landen Payne combined to shut down the Bulldogs’ offense, with Payne striking out the side in the ninth to earn his first save. On the other side, Mississippi State’s Charlie Foster struggled, giving up three runs on one hit and taking the loss.

This win comes as Mississippi State makes their first trip to Hattiesburg since 2018, when Southern Miss swept a three-game series. The Golden Eagles are now gearing up for a weekend series against Louisiana Tech as they continue their season-opening homestand.

With a record-breaking crowd of 5,741 in attendance, Southern Miss showed that they are a force to be reckoned with this season. The team will look to carry this momentum into their upcoming games against tough competition.
