Connecticut man admits guilt in 2022 shooting of Olympian’s mother by stray bullet

Jasper Greene of New Haven, Connecticut, has pleaded guilty to murder in the tragic stray-bullet killing of Mabel Martinez Antongiorgi, the mother of Puerto Rican Olympic athlete Yarimar Mercado Martinez. The 56-year-old woman was fatally shot while sewing in her Waterbury home on April 9, 2022. Greene, along with two other men, was involved in the shooting, which was the result of a dispute that one of the suspects had with another man. The suspects shot up a car on Martinez Antongiorgi’s street, mistakenly believing the man was inside. Another bystander was wounded but survived. Greene faces a 35-year sentence for murder as part of his plea deal, with the opportunity to argue for 30 years at his sentencing on June 3. The single murder charge carries a mandatory 25-year minimum sentence in Connecticut, and other charges against Greene were dropped in the agreement. One of the other suspects, Franklin Robinson, has also been charged in connection with the case and is awaiting trial. The incident has left a devastating impact on the family of the victim, with Yarimar Mercado Martinez competing for Puerto Rico in the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games while her mother was tragically killed.
