Former Arkansas Governor Jim Guy Tucker has passed away at the age of 81 in Little Rock. Tucker, who succeeded Bill Clinton as governor in 1992 and was later convicted during the Whitewater investigation, died from complications of ulcerative colitis.
Tucker’s daughter, Anna Ashton, remembered her father as a wonderful person, despite his public controversies. Tucker was convicted in 1996 of lying about the use of a government-backed loan, part of the broader Whitewater investigation led by Kenneth Starr. Tucker maintained that he would not have been prosecuted if not for his connection to Clinton.
Tucker’s political career started in 1970, leading to terms as attorney general, congressman, and lieutenant governor before becoming governor. He had health issues, including ulcerative colitis and liver disease, but remained active until his passing.
Former President Bill Clinton praised Tucker’s service to Arkansas, noting that his career was cut short unfairly. Current Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders also remembered Tucker for his dedication to public service.
Tucker left behind his wife, stepchildren, and daughters. His legacy will be remembered in Arkansas politics despite the controversies that marked his tenure.
