Museum of Coastal Mississippi Mardi Gras

Coastal Mississippi Mardi Gras Museum in Biloxi, Mississippi, offers a deep dive into the history of Mardi Gras beyond the beads and parades typically associated with the celebration. Founded in the late 80s, the museum showcases costume pieces from various krewes along the Coast, including crowns, mantels, dresses, trains, doubloons, and more.

Executive director Abreeza Thomas explains that Mardi Gras dates back to ancient times overseas and the museum aims to cover the Mardi Gras traditions of the entire Coast, not just specific groups. The museum has seen growth over the years and relies on donations, grants, memberships, and other sources of funding to continue its operations as a nonprofit organization.

Tickets to the museum are $8 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under, and students with valid IDs. The museum also offers programs supported by the City of Biloxi, Gulf Coast Carnival Association, Mississippi Arts Commission, and private donors.

As the museum continues to expand, storage space has become limited, and all donations must be reviewed via email before dropoff. Despite the challenges, the museum remains dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich history and traditions of Mardi Gras on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for future generations to enjoy.
