Arkansas Mourns the Loss of Former Governor Jim Guy Tucker at Age 81

Former Arkansas Governor Jim Guy Tucker, a prominent figure in Arkansas politics, passed away in Little Rock at the age of 81 after battling an illness. Tucker, a Democrat, served as governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, U.S. Congressman, and prosecuting attorney. He was a key player in Arkansas politics from the 1970s through the 1990s and almost became a U.S. Senator in a close race against David Pryor in 1978.

Tucker, who was born in Oklahoma City in 1943, had a varied career in both politics and business. Despite facing health issues that cut short his military service, Tucker went on to graduate from Harvard and become involved in journalism before pursuing a law degree and entering politics. As governor, Tucker addressed a Medicaid funding crisis and pushed through a soft drink tax, as well as other significant reforms.

Unfortunately, Tucker’s career was marred by the Whitewater scandal, which led to his resignation in 1996 after being convicted of misapplying funds from a bank loan. Despite attempts at a political comeback, Tucker’s reputation never fully recovered from the scandal.

Jim Guy Tucker is survived by his wife, Betty, and four children. Throughout his life, he made a significant impact on Arkansas politics and beyond, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered by those who knew him.
