Trump fires head of the National Archives

President Donald Trump has dismissed the head of the National Archives, Colleen Shogan, at his direction. This follows through on a vow he made last month to change the agency’s leadership, as they were involved in a criminal case accusing Trump of mishandling classified documents. The National Archives alerted the Justice Department in 2022 that Trump had not returned records as required, leading to a criminal investigation. Shogan, who became national archivist in May 2023, was not leading the agency at the time of its involvement in the case. Trump eventually returned some records but kept others, leading to a criminal investigation and federal charges against him. The case was dismissed by a Trump-appointed federal judge last year. Since taking office, the Trump administration has dismissed officials involved in investigations against the president, including firing Justice Department lawyers and FBI officials. Two groups of FBI agents have sued the DOJ, alleging they were targeted for dismissal based on a survey they were instructed to fill out.
