Mississippi House Approves Bill Legalizing Mobile Sports Betting

The Mississippi online sports betting bill has passed the House of Representatives and is now headed to the Senate. Authored by Rep. Casey Eure, the bill allows residents aged 21 and above to bet on sports from their mobile devices. One major change is that the bill will permit up to 52 online sportsbooks to operate in the state, up from 26 last year. The measure also addresses concerns about gambling addiction by excluding credit card payments and implementing strict verification requirements.

Lawmakers have expressed concerns about the potential impact of mobile sports wagering on physical sports betting establishments. Rep. Eure reassured fellow lawmakers that all mobile sports betting will be tethered to brick-and-mortar casinos in Mississippi. The bill also aims to protect smaller casinos by establishing a fund fueled by sports betting taxes to support them in the initial years post-legalization.

Supporters of the bill believe it will help curb illegal offshore sports betting activities in the state and generate revenue through legal sports betting. The bill is seen as a way for Mississippi to compete with other states with legalized sports betting industries. The Senate will now consider the measure, with all eyes on the outcome of their deliberations.
