Arkansas Supreme Court Justice preferred to keep video footage private

Arkansas Chief Justice-elect Karen Baker has been caught up in controversy after video footage emerged of her entering the office of Marty Sullivan, director of the Administrative Office of the Courts, without his permission. The incident reportedly left the office “disheveled” and some members of the AOC staff feeling harassed. Baker has since been accused of attempting to prevent the video footage from being made public, which would be a violation of Arkansas’ Freedom of Information Act.

Justice Baker’s actions were reported to Arkansas Supreme Court officials, who issued a memo stating that justices are not allowed to enter the locked offices of anyone outside of their chamber staff without permission. Baker has denied any wrongdoing, stating that she only entered the office for a tour of the newly-built workspace and left when she realized Sullivan was not present.

Despite Baker’s attempts to keep the video footage from circulating, it is considered public information and subject to Arkansas’ FOIA. Baker has since sent her own FOIA request seeking any Justice Building video surveillance footage captured on the day in question.

The controversy surrounding Baker’s actions has raised questions about transparency and accountability within the Arkansas Supreme Court. While Baker maintains her innocence, the incident has shed light on the importance of upholding the principles of the Freedom of Information Act in the state.
