Perry Central Becomes One of Twelve High Schools in the State to Introduce Girls Flag Football as a Varsity Sport


Female athletes in Mississippi high schools will have a new opportunity this spring as schools across the state add girls flag football to their list of varsity sports. This initiative, spearheaded by a partnership between the NFL’s New Orleans Saints and the Mississippi High School Athletic Association, aims to provide more opportunities for young girls to participate in football.

Perry Central High School and Oak Grove High School are among the 12 Mississippi high schools participating in this program. With strong interest from students, primarily members of the Lady Bulldogs basketball team, coaches are gearing up for the start of the season in March.

PCHS sophomore Madison Travis expressed her excitement about trying something new and bonding with her teammates through flag football. Coaches are working to finalize rosters and logistics for the upcoming season, with the first practice scheduled for February 18.

Coach Conswayla Bourne, who is new to coaching flag football, is optimistic about the potential of the program to open doors for players beyond the high school level. The season will see games held at Southwest Mississippi Community College and Picayune High School, providing a platform for players to showcase their skills and potentially earn scholarships.

With over 20,000 participants nationwide and growing interest in girls flag football, Mississippi joins 22 other states in offering this opportunity to female athletes. This program not only promotes physical activity and teamwork but also creates pathways for young women to excel in the sport and beyond.
