Mississippi Senate committee narrowly approves wine shipping to consumers

Mississippi is on the brink of allowing direct shipment of wine to consumers, bringing the state in line with the majority of the country. The Senate Finance Committee narrowly passed legislation that would permit residents to order wine from out-of-state wineries, making Mississippi one of only three states without this option. State Senator Jeremy England, who presented the bill, emphasized that it would exclusively apply to wines and not other spirits, opening up access to unique and hard-to-find options for Mississippians.

The bill requires a direct wine shipper permit, with sales tax of 15.5% on each shipment, allocating 3% towards mental health services. There are restrictions on the amount of wine that can be shipped to each address, with an amendment changing the limit from 24 cases per individual to per address or household. Senators expressed concerns about the impact on package retail stores, but England assured them that other states with similar legislation still have these stores in operation.

Critics of the bill argue that allowing direct wine shipments could hurt local businesses, but proponents believe it will provide consumers with more choices and access to unique wines. The legislation now moves to the Senate floor for further consideration. If passed, it would bring Mississippi in line with the rest of the country in terms of direct wine shipment laws.
