Mississippi House approves bill legalizing mobile sports betting

The Mississippi House of Representatives has passed a bill to legalize mobile sports betting in the state. House Bill 1302, also known as the “Mississippi Sports Wagering Act,” received an 82-10 vote and is aimed at allowing individuals aged 21 and older to place legal sports wagers on regulated events through mobile devices, similar to current casino operations in Mississippi.

Despite mobile sports betting already being prevalent in the state through the black market, the bill seeks to bring it into the legal realm to generate potential tax revenue. Mississippi has lagged behind neighboring states like Louisiana and Tennessee, which have seen significant tax revenue from mobile sports betting.

The proposed legislation would impose a 12% tax on revenue from mobile sports betting, with proceeds allocated for road and bridge repairs in all 82 Mississippi counties. The bill would also require geofencing to ensure betting occurs within the state and allow casinos to partner with up to two online betting platforms.

While concerns have been raised about potential job losses at smaller casinos and the impact on local revenue, the bill includes a provision for a $6 million “Retail Sports Wagering Protection” fund to assist casinos facing financial losses due to mobile betting.

The bill will now move to the Senate for review, as stakeholders continue to debate the implications and benefits of legalizing mobile sports betting in Mississippi.
