Vincent Lemark Burrell, a Georgia man, was sentenced to 475 years in prison for facilitating dog fighting and abusing animals. In November 2022, authorities seized 107 dogs from his property in Dallas, Georgia, following a report from an Amazon delivery worker. The dogs showed signs of abuse, including being underweight, lacking food, water, and shelter, and being restrained with logging chains. Burrell was arrested the same day based on allegations of facilitating dog fights and animal cruelty.
Evidence found on Burrell’s property linked him to dog fighting, including items like a treadmill designed for dogs, a breeding stand, a break stick, veterinarian-only medication, and sales contracts for dogs. A veterinarian examined the dogs and found evidence of removed teeth and scars from fighting.
Among the seized dogs was Baby Shark, an 8-week-old puppy at the time, rescued by the Friends of the Forlorn Animal Rescue organization. Burrell denied involvement in dog fighting during his court trial. He was convicted by a jury on 93 counts of dog fighting and 10 counts of cruelty to animals, resulting in the 475-year sentence imposed by Superior Court Judge Dean C. Bucci. It was referred to as the longest sentence for dog fighting known so far. Despite the conviction, it remains unclear whether Burrell will appeal the decision.
