Human remains were discovered in Carroll County, Mississippi this weekend along with a gold necklace bearing the name of missing University of Mississippi student Jimmie “Jay” Lee. While authorities have not confirmed the identity of the remains, the necklace found at the scene matches one that Lee was known to wear in photos on his Instagram account. Lee had been missing since July 2022, with suspicions arising that a fellow student, Sheldon Timothy Herrington Jr., was involved in his disappearance. Herrington, who was accused of killing Lee to hide their relationship, faced a trial for capital murder in December, but a mistrial was declared due to a hung jury.
Carroll County Sheriff Clint Walker has not commented on the discovery of the remains, and the Oxford Police Department was unreachable at the time of reporting. The human remains were found approximately an hour and a half south of Oxford, where Lee was last seen. Herrington was captured on video obtaining tools from his parents’ home around the time of Lee’s disappearance.
The uncertainty surrounding the identity of the remains and the ongoing investigation have left Lee’s family and the LGBTQ+ community in Oxford in a state of limbo. The case highlights the complexities of justice and closure in cases where victims’ bodies are not recovered. The search for answers continues as authorities work to conclusively determine the identity of the remains found in Carroll County.
