Using VPNs as a solution to bypass the U.S. TikTok ban is not effective

U.S. TikTok users are finding that virtual private networks (VPNs) are not helping them access the banned app, suggesting that the company has taken extra precautions to prevent Americans from circumventing the ban. Despite VPNs typically being able to bypass internet restrictions, their attempts to access TikTok have been unsuccessful. It is unclear how TikTok has implemented the ban, but it may involve blocking accounts registered with an American phone number. Despite attempts to use VPNs, users are still receiving a message indicating that TikTok is not available due to a law banning the app in the U.S. Analysts have noted that there is no evidence of internet service providers blocking the app, suggesting that TikTok has intentionally made the service inoperable for U.S. users. President Biden signed a law in April requiring TikTok to divest from its Chinese parent company or face potential banishment from the U.S. Currently, the app is not available on major app stores owned by Google and Apple. Despite the ban, multiple VPN apps were at the top of Apple’s App Store rankings, indicating that users are still searching for ways to access TikTok.
