In a highly-anticipated matchup, Mississippi State closed out its 2024 football season with a tough 26-14 loss to No. 14 Ole Miss in the Battle for the Golden Egg. Despite a strong performance from quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr., who threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns, the Bulldogs ultimately fell short.

The game saw both teams trading leads throughout the contest. After Ole Miss opened the scoring with a field goal, Mississippi State quickly responded with a touchdown pass from Van Buren to Kevin Coleman Jr. However, Ole Miss regained the lead with a touchdown run from JJ Pegues before Van Buren scored again on the ground to give MSU a 14-10 advantage.

In the second quarter, Ole Miss once again took the lead with a touchdown run from Ulysses Bentley, heading into halftime with a 17-14 lead. The Rebels extended their lead with a field goal in the third quarter and sealed the victory with a touchdown pass from Jaxson Dart in the fourth quarter.

Despite a competitive effort from Mississippi State, Ole Miss was able to hold on for the win in the annual rivalry game. The Bulldogs end their season with a 7-5 record, while Ole Miss improves to 9-3. Both teams will now look ahead to the bowl season as they aim to finish the year on a high note.
