Obama, Clinton, and Bush will not attend Trump’s inaugural lunch

Former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush have declined invitations to attend President-elect Donald Trump’s traditional inaugural lunch. Obama, Clinton, and Bush will, however, attend the swearing-in ceremony earlier in the day, along with their respective teams. The former first ladies will also attend the swearing-in ceremony, except for Michelle Obama, although no reason was provided for her absence. Michelle Obama also did not attend former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral service last week.

Inauguration Day is typically when all living former presidents congregate to usher in the next administration, but Trump had declined to attend President Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021. None of the living former presidents supported Trump’s candidacy, with Bush not making an endorsement, and Obama and Clinton actively campaigning for Vice President Kamala Harris. In 2017, the Clintons attended the luncheon after Trump defeated Hillary Clinton, with Trump expressing honor when they arrived.

The inaugural luncheon tradition dates back to 1897 and involves the Senate Committee on Arrangements hosting a lunch for the incoming president and guests at the Capitol. In 1953, the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies began hosting the luncheon for the incoming president, vice president, and their guests, where politicians typically deliver speeches and toast the new administration. The Trump transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the former presidents’ absences.
