Mississippi students Shayleen Moeini and Jackson Pearce from Gulfport have been selected to represent their state at the U.S. Senate Youth Program Washington Week. The two students will join Senators Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith in attending meetings with top officials in Washington, including President Donald Trump and Supreme Court justices. They will also receive $10,000 scholarships.
Moeini, a senior at St. Patrick Catholic High School, plans to study biology and policy at Columbia University. Pearce, a senior at Gulfport High School, plans to major in aerospace engineering and public policy at the University of Alabama or public policy at Yale University.
Senators Wicker and Hyde-Smith congratulated the students for their achievements and expressed confidence in their ability to represent Mississippi well. Alternates to the program were also named, including students from Simpson Academy and Jackson Prep.
The U.S. Senate Youth Program was established in 1962 to encourage young people to consider public service and learn about the federal government. Each year, two students from each state participate in the program, which includes a week of intensive study in Washington.
The Mississippi State Department of Education selected the delegates and alternates from nominated students, with final selections confirmed by state school officers. The program aims to educate students on the importance of democratic decision-making and to inspire them to continue studying government and public affairs.
