Senate Gaming Chair expresses worries about the possibility of legalizing mobile sports betting

The push to legalize mobile sports betting in Mississippi is set to continue in the current legislative session after a failed attempt in 2024. Despite strong support in the House, resistance in the Senate led to the Mississippi Sports Wagering Act being defeated. Now, the House is planning to reintroduce a bill to allow legal mobile sports betting in the state.

Republican House Speaker Jason White is optimistic about the bill’s chances in the House, but doubts remain about the Senate’s position on the matter. Senate Gaming Committee Chair David Blount is skeptical of the benefits of mobile sports betting, citing concerns about potential negative impacts on tourism, economic growth, and existing brick-and-mortar casinos.

Proponents of legalizing mobile sports betting argue that it would drive revenue and eliminate illegal betting activities, while opponents fear it could harm the state’s gaming industry. Despite efforts to protect the interests of casinos by requiring partnerships with existing establishments, some casino representatives remain opposed to the idea.

While the future of legal mobile sports betting in Mississippi remains uncertain, the issue is gaining traction across the country. With 30 states already allowing mobile sports betting, there is growing pressure for Mississippi to join the trend. As the debate continues, lawmakers will need to weigh the potential benefits and drawbacks of legalizing mobile sports betting in the state.
