‘Quademic’ rapidly spreading across Mississippi

Mississippi health officials are raising the alarm about a ‘Quademic’ – a surge of four viruses including the flu, Norovirus, COVID-19, and RSV which have been rapidly increasing in the state over the last few months, according to the CDC. Dr. Andrew Clark of Northtown Pharmacy describes the situation as “pretty bad”, with a noticeable uptick in cases prompting experts to advise taking extra precautions.

The state’s new Epidemiologist, Dr. Renia Dotson, notes the concerning rise in numbers and emphasizes the importance of closely monitoring the situation. Factors such as holiday gatherings, cold weather encouraging indoor congregation, and fluctuating temperatures are seen as contributors to the increase in respiratory illnesses.

Preventive measures include practicing good hand hygiene, staying home when feeling sick, and minimizing exposure to sick individuals. Dr. Clark recommends getting up-to-date vaccinations, including the updated COVID vaccine, to reduce the risk of infection. Testing for these viruses is available at local health departments, with a reminder for those experiencing symptoms to seek immediate care to prevent further spread.

With cases on the rise in Mississippi and over 35 other states, health officials are urging vigilance and proactive measures to protect against the ‘Quademic’. By staying informed, practicing preventive strategies, and seeking medical attention when needed, individuals can help curb the spread of these winter viruses.
