Videos reveal grim scene as over 100 feared dead in South African mine tragedy

Rescuers in South Africa are sending a cage-like structure into one of the country’s deepest mines to try and bring out survivors among hundreds of illegal miners trapped underground for months in an abandoned shaft. More than 100 are believed to have died due to starvation or dehydration. Authorities say that at least 18 bodies and 26 survivors have been brought out, but more than 500 miners are still underground. The miners have been in a tense standoff with police since authorities tried to force them out in November. Reports suggest that some miners have been underground since July or August last year.

Rights groups and activists have criticized police tactics in cutting off the miners’ food and water supplies from the surface to try and force them out. The miners are unable to climb out because the shaft is steep and the ropes they used have been removed. Illegal mining is common in South Africa where companies close down unprofitable mines, leaving informal miners to enter illegally.

The Mining Affected Communities United in Action group released videos showing dead bodies wrapped in plastic and emaciated miners underground. The government has been under scrutiny for their approach, with some officials referring to the miners as criminals. Authorities have confirmed that some miners have managed to escape, but many are too weak to climb out. The situation remains dire as efforts continue to rescue those still trapped underground.
