The Mississippi House of Representatives has introduced House Bill 1, a comprehensive tax reform bill that aims to put more money back into the pockets of Mississippi taxpayers. The bill, which is over 100 pages long, proposes the complete elimination of the individual income tax over a ten-year period, as well as a reduction in the grocery tax. In order to offset these reductions, the bill also includes provisions to increase other taxes, such as a 5-cent tax on fuel by removing the exemption on sales tax.
House Democrats are still reviewing the details of the bill and are hesitant to fully support it until they are sure it will not negatively impact services like education, health, and infrastructure, particularly for low-income families. However, House Speaker Jason White believes that the plan covers these concerns and will enhance neglected areas such as roads and bridges.
The bill is set to be brought up in committee as early as this week, with House leaders confident that it will benefit the state of Mississippi in the long run. Overall, the goal of House Bill 1 is to provide tax relief for individuals while ensuring that core government functions are adequately funded. Subscribe to the WLBT newsletter for more news updates.
