Dr. Renia Dotson has been appointed as Mississippi’s new state epidemiologist by the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH). Originally from Monroeville, Alabama, Dr. Dotson has a background in colon and rectal surgery, having practiced for 23 years at Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville. She joined MSDH in 2024 as the director of the Center for Public Health Transformation, and will now be focusing on studying the causes and patterns of disease and injury in the state’s population, particularly in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
As a state epidemiologist, Dr. Dotson will play a crucial role in helping to monitor and control the spread of diseases within Mississippi. The role requires a deep understanding of public health, and an ability to analyze data to identify trends and patterns that can inform prevention strategies. Dr. Dotson’s experience in surgery and her tenure at MSDH make her a strong candidate for the position, with a proven track record of dedication to public health.
Theresa Kittle has also been named as the new deputy state epidemiologist, joining Dr. Dotson in her efforts to protect and improve the health of Mississippi residents. With their combined expertise and leadership, MSDH is well-positioned to continue its important work in epidemiology and public health.
