Friends, family, and community members gathered at the Lyman Community Center in Gulfport to remember and honor 18-year-old Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux, who tragically lost her life in a terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day. Dedeaux, a recent graduate of Harrison Central High School, was in the city to celebrate the new year with her cousin and a friend when a pickup truck driven by the suspect, Shamsud Din Bahar Jabbar, plowed into a crowd before opening fire.
Over 100 people attended the funeral service, where Dedeaux’s body lay surrounded by flowers and loved ones. Co-workers and friends shared memories of Dedeaux, describing her as a bright, cheerful person with a giving spirit. Many wore pink, one of her favorite colors, to honor her memory.
President Joe Biden visited New Orleans to meet with the victims’ families, offering comfort and support during this difficult time. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves ordered the state flag to be flown at half-staff to honor Dedeaux and another victim, Matthew Tenedorio.
Dedeaux was remembered as an honor-roll student who loved to travel and spend time with friends. Her obituary described her as a shining light who left an indelible mark on everyone she met.
The community came together to show love and support for Dedeaux’s family during the service, highlighting the impact she had on those around her. As they continue to mourn her loss, they remember her as a beloved daughter, sister, and friend.
