Special Counsel Jack Smith has resigned from the Justice Department, with his report on Trump’s alleged involvement in the 2020 election interference expected to be released soon. Trump has denied the allegations. Smith submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025, and separated from the department on January 10. The government is asking a judge not to extend the restriction blocking part of Smith’s report from being released. Trump was indicted on charges related to overturning the 2020 election results but entered a not guilty plea before the case was dropped. These federal charges, brought by Smith, were dismissed after Trump was elected in 2024 due to the longstanding policy of the Justice Department not to prosecute a sitting president.
