Family Fit Lifestyle Month is in full swing, and the University of Illinois Extension is here to provide some helpful tips to maximize your physical activity during the winter months. The recommendation of getting 150 minutes of physical activity each week may seem challenging, but there are ways to stay active even in the cold weather.
One suggestion is to bundle up and go for a walk outside. Even a short, brisk walk around the block can help you get some fresh air and exercise. You can also engage in a winter scavenger hunt with your kids or grandkids in the neighborhood or nearby park. If going outside is not an option, there are plenty of free at-home workouts available online that you can do in the comfort of your own living room.
Another idea is to find a fitness center near you that has an indoor pool and recumbent bikes, which are perfect for those with arthritis or recent knee replacements. Consider getting a temporary gym membership for a few months and see if you qualify for any discounts.
The goal for Family Fit Month is to aim for 30 minutes of movement, 5 days per week. By staying active and finding activities that you enjoy, you can continue on the path to a healthier lifestyle. Take this Wellness Wake Up Call and make your health a priority this January.
