Progress being made on MDOT road improvements in South Mississippi

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is currently working on two major projects in Diamondhead that are causing some inconvenience for commuters like Rj Williams. The Diamondhead interchange and I-10 widening projects are aimed at increasing capacity on the interstate and improving traffic flow in the area. MDOT is widening the Diamondhead bridge and adding paved multi-use shoulders, as well as widening I-10 from four to six lanes from County Farm Road to Diamondhead.

Although the projects are causing some delays for commuters, MDOT Public Information Officer Anna Ehrgott assures that the improvements will benefit drivers in the long run. The I-10 widening project also involves repairing and replacing bridges, as well as paving roads. Westbound traffic has been shifted to allow for the construction of a noise barrier wall near the Diamondhead exit, and progress is being made on widening the Kiln-Delisle, Vidalia, and Wolf River bridges.

The Diamondhead project comes with a $17 million price tag, while the I-10 widening project is estimated to cost $155 million and be completed by 2027. In addition to increasing capacity, drivers can also expect technological upgrades such as additional traffic cameras and digital message signs to help with traffic management.

While the construction may cause some inconvenience in the short term, the improvements being made by MDOT are ultimately aimed at enhancing safety and efficiency for commuters traveling through Diamondhead.
