UK’s anti-corruption minister reports herself to ethics watchdog regarding ties to deposed Bangladeshi PM

British Treasury minister Tulip Siddiq has voluntarily referred herself to the U.K. government’s ethics watchdog after reports emerged linking her to properties in London associated with her aunt, Sheikh Hasina, the ousted Bangladeshi prime minister. Prime Minister Keir Starmer affirmed Siddiq’s decision, stating that she acted appropriately by seeking the advice of the independent adviser on ministerial standards. The anti-corruption investigation in Bangladesh implicated Siddiq’s family in a 2013 deal with Russia for a nuclear power plant, alleging embezzlement of funds.

Reports in the Sunday Times and Financial Times suggested Siddiq received apartments in London from affiliates of Bangladesh’s Awami League, led by Hasina. Hasina was overthrown in August 2024 following a mass uprising that resulted in casualties, with the former prime minister now residing in India and facing numerous court cases, including charges of crimes against humanity. In her response to the watchdog, Siddiq maintained her innocence and urged an independent verification of the facts.

Starmer expressed confidence in Siddiq, a 42-year-old lawmaker from north London elected in 2015. Siddiq was scheduled to join a government delegation to China but will remain in Britain in light of the controversy. The situation underscores the importance of ethical conduct among government officials and the need for transparency in addressing potential conflicts of interest.
