Trump moves to prevent the immediate publication of special counsel Jack Smith’s report

President-elect Donald Trump and his former co-defendants in a Florida classified documents case are seeking to block special counsel Jack Smith from releasing a final report that addresses the election interference case. The cases against Trump have already been dismissed, with the judge ruling Smith’s appointment as unconstitutional. Trump’s lawyers argue that Smith, as an “out-of-control private citizen,” is politically motivated in targeting Trump and should be removed from his position. Defense lawyers for Nauta and De Oliveira, the other defendants, are also urging the judge to block the report’s release, believing it to be biased and aiming to label everyone charged as guilty. The Justice Department is required to provide a confidential report to Attorney General Merrick Garland, who can decide whether to make it public. The special counsel’s office plans to resign before Trump takes office. The charges against Trump in Florida were dismissed due to the illegal appointment of Smith, and the election interference case against him was dropped as well. Federal prosecutors are still appealing the dismissal of charges against Nauta and De Oliveira. The situation is further complicated by the Justice Department’s policy of not prosecuting sitting presidents and the impending change of administrations.
