President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden visited New Orleans to meet with families, survivors, and local law enforcement affected by the deadly New Year’s Day attack that killed 14 people and wounded many others. The Bidens paid their respects at a memorial on Bourbon Street, where they laid flowers and stood quietly with their heads bowed.
The White House announced that the Biden administration would provide additional federal resources to support New Orleans’ preparations for the upcoming Super Bowl and Mardi Gras events. This assistance includes explosive detection canine teams, cyber risk assessments, venue screening teams, and air security support, among other measures. The administration is committed to ensuring that these events are safe and secure.
The attacker, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was an Army veteran from Texas who was inspired by ISIS and expressed a desire to kill in videos posted on social media. Jabbar drove a rented pickup truck into crowds celebrating the new year before being killed in a shootout with police.
Overall, Biden’s visit to New Orleans was a gesture of solidarity and support for the community as they continue to recover from the tragic attack. The additional federal resources provided by the administration aim to bolster security measures for future events in the city.
