Jones County commissioners are contemplating removing tax board following audit shortcomings

A petition signed by 159 people in Jones County, Georgia is calling for the removal of Chief Tax Assessor Tony George following two failed tax audits. The county commission is set to discuss removing George and the tax assessor board in an open meeting on January 7th. While the commissioners cannot remove George, they can remove the board members, paving the way for replacements. The decision to initiate the removal process stems from concerns raised by the county commissioners regarding the tax assessor’s office and the board of tax assessors.

Citizen Matthew Sims, who is part of a group advocating for George’s removal, led a petition drive to support the cause. Sims believes that despite potential increases in taxes, removing George is in the best interest of the county. The board of commissioners is expected to hear public comment during an open session on Tuesday, followed by a vote on removal. If removed, the board members can appeal the decision in superior court.

The goal of the petition and subsequent removal process is to address the issues revealed by the failed tax audits and ensure better management in the tax assessor’s office. While George declined to comment on the matter, the county administration remains focused on addressing the concerns raised by the community. The outcome of Tuesday’s meeting has significant implications for the future of the tax assessor’s office in Jones County.
