At least three special elections will be held in Mississippi this year to fill legislative seats.

Mississippi will see at least three special elections this year to fill vacant legislative seats following the deaths of two representatives and the upcoming appointment of a senator to the Mississippi Supreme Court. Rep. Charles Young, Jr. and Rep. Andy Stepp passed away in December, while Sen. Jenifer Branning will be sworn into the Supreme Court on January 6. Governor Tate Reeves has announced that the special elections to fill Young and Stepp’s seats will be held on March 25, with the qualifying deadline set for February 3. The election date for Branning’s Senate seat has not yet been determined as she has not technically vacated her position. This means that these areas will be without representation for much of the 2025 legislative session. Additionally, municipal elections taking place this year could lead to even more special elections to fill vacant legislative seats. Several lawmakers, including Rep. Fred Shanks and Sen. John Horhn, have qualified to run for mayor in their respective cities, which may require the governor to set special elections to replace them if they are successful. Overall, Mississippians will have the opportunity to participate in several important elections throughout the year to ensure adequate representation in their government.
