53 people confirmed dead following a 7.1-magnitude earthquake in Tibet, China

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck near one of Tibet’s holiest cities, Dingri County in Shigatse, western China, killing at least 53 people and injuring 62 others. The earthquake occurred at a depth of nearly 6 miles and tremors were felt as far as the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu. Chinese authorities dispatched nearly 1,500 fire and rescue personnel to the affected area, where many houses near the epicenter collapsed and some people were trapped. The full extent of the disaster is still being assessed. The region is prone to earthquakes due to its location on a fault line between the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. In the past century, there have been several earthquakes at magnitude 6 or above in the area. In 2008, almost 70,000 people were killed in a massive quake in Sichuan, China, while in 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Nepal killed nearly 9,000 people and damaged almost a million structures. Tuesday’s earthquake adds to the history of seismic activity in the Himalayan region and highlights the need for continued preparedness and response efforts in the face of natural disasters.
