Tally of Mississippi tornadoes increases to 27 from December storms

The recent tornado count from the December storms in Mississippi has increased to 27, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). The storms caused significant damage across multiple counties, resulting in two deaths and numerous injuries. The damage includes homes, businesses, farms, and apartments. The fatalities occurred in Adams and Lowndes counties, with one victim being an 18-year-old girl who was killed when a tree fell on her home in Natchez.

In response to the devastation, Entergy Mississippi worked to restore power to over 45,000 customers affected by the storms. Storm victims are advised to file insurance claims, document the damage with photos, and report it to the county/MEMA using the “self-report tool.” MEMA is collecting data and assessing the impact of the storms to determine the type of assistance needed for the affected communities.

The severe weather also prompted teams from the National Weather Service to assess the storm’s intensity, which reached EF-2 levels in some areas. The storm path spanned several counties, causing destruction in various locations, including Meadville, McCall Creek, and Natchez. As the investigation and cleanup efforts continue, residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and well-being.
