Three people were killed and 20 were injured in a fireworks explosion in a residential neighborhood in Honolulu on New Year’s Eve. The explosion occurred at a house near Fort Shafter, with videos showing a rapid series of bursts creating a blinding light. Emergency personnel found dozens of victims, with two pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not released a cause for the explosion. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi called the incident a reminder of the dangers of illegal fireworks. Aerial fireworks require a permit in Hawaii, but enforcement is limited. New Year’s Eve fireworks have a long history in Hawaii, with efforts to curb illegal fireworks dating back years. In addition to the Honolulu incident, five people were injured in four other fireworks-related incidents on Oahu.
