Three people were injured after a section of the Santa Cruz municipal wharf collapsed into the ocean on Monday. The incident occurred around 12:45 p.m. PT during heavy storm swells. Two people were rescued from the water, while the third person managed to get out on their own. The collapse was due to heavy surf and resulted in about 150 feet of the pier being closed to the public. The individuals who fell into the water were a project manager and two contractors working on the wharf construction project. They sustained minor injuries and were hospitalized. The National Weather Service Bay Area issued a warning about the dangerous weather conditions in the area, including high surf, rip currents, sneaker waves, and coastal flooding. The unaffected portions of the wharf were evacuated following the collapse. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with working or being near the water during severe weather conditions.
