Two people were killed and others injured when armed men opened fire on a group of journalists gathered for a government press conference announcing the reopening of Haiti’s largest public hospital. A journalist and a police officer were killed in the attack. Haiti’s national police did not immediately respond to requests for information. The transitional presidential council condemned the act and expressed sympathy to the victims’ families. The shooting occurred as journalists awaited the arrival of Haiti’s new health minister for the press conference in Port-au-Prince. The hospital had been closed since March due to a surge in gang attacks following the ousting of former Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Health Minister Duckenson Lorthe Blema was installed in late November as part of a cabinet re-shuffle after the ousting of former Prime Minister Garry Conille. The State University of Haiti Hospital, also known as the General Hospital, is the largest public hospital in the country and had been closed due to security concerns.
