Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, recently praised tech mogul Elon Musk for speaking out against an early version of a stopgap funding bill that passed the House and was signed by President Joe Biden. Gonzales compared Musk to a “prime minister” for his influence on the funding process, despite not holding any elected position in the U.S. government. Musk, who was a big supporter of President-elect Donald Trump, was vocal in opposing a government funding deal negotiated by Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. He called the bill “one of the worst ever written” and urged Republicans to shut down the government instead of voting for the continuing resolution. Musk’s opposition to the bill, expressed over 100 times on his social media platform X, led to Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance releasing a statement against the bill, causing wavering support among congressional Republicans. When GOP congressional leaders released a new, smaller continuing resolution, Musk praised the size of the bill. Despite concerns that Musk may be usurping control from the president-elect, Trump dismissed them, noting that Musk was not born in the U.S., implying he is ineligible to be president.
