A 22-year-old Michigan man, Mack Davis, has admitted to planning a mass shooting at a local political party’s headquarters and a nearby bar because he associated both locations with gay people. Davis pleaded guilty to committing a hate crime and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. He had amassed an arsenal of weapons and researched mass killers in preparation for the attack. Davis also targeted his neighbor, who he knew to be gay, by vandalizing their property and spray-painting a slur on their car. In June, he test-fired one of his firearms at his neighbors’ properties before being arrested. Davis’ attorney did not comment on the case. The Justice Department condemned the hate-fueled violence and vowed to prosecute those who commit such crimes. Davis’ chilling plans to carry out mass shootings were disrupted by law enforcement, and he will be sentenced at a later date. Mass shootings at gay bars in Orlando in 2016 and Colorado Springs in 2020 are referenced, with the 2016 attack resulting in 49 deaths. Lawsuits filed regarding the Colorado shooting allege that authorities could have prevented the tragedy by enforcing Colorado’s red flag law.
