Police say man accused of killing Ole Miss student provided conflicting information during trial

A man is on trial for the killing of University of Mississippi student Jimmie “Jay” Lee, who disappeared in July 2022. Testimony revealed conflicting information given by the accused, Sheldon “Timothy” Herrington Jr., to police about his relationship with the victim. Initially, Herrington denied having a sexual relationship with Lee, but later admitted to a “deeper relationship” and a sexual encounter just before Lee’s disappearance.

Despite Lee’s body never being found, a judge has declared him dead. Prosecutors argue that Herrington, charged with capital murder, had a relationship with Lee and is responsible for his death. Security footage showed a man believed to be Herrington jogging out of the parking lot where Lee’s car was found on the day of the disappearance, adding to the evidence against him.

Both Herrington and Lee had graduated from the University of Mississippi. Lee, known for his involvement in the LGBTQ+ community and creative expression through fashion and makeup, was pursuing a master’s degree. Prosecutors have ruled out pursuing the death penalty in this case, meaning Herrington could face a life sentence if convicted. The trial sheds light on the tragic fate of an aspiring student deeply involved in the university and local community.
