Lino Lakes Elementary principal, Jan Masterson, recently took the plunge into a frozen lake after her students raised over $8,000 in a fundraiser to update technology at the school. Masterson made herself the top prize in the Laptop Loon-a-Tic fundraiser, promising to jump if $7,000 was raised. The Quad Press caught up with Masterson to discuss her chilling experience.
Masterson admitted it was her first polar plunge and that the anticipation was the worst part. However, the support from the Lino Lakes community and the excitement from the students made it worthwhile. She never expected the students to raise that much money, but the overwhelming parent support made it possible.
The $8,000 raised will go towards updating technology at Lino Lakes Elementary to ensure students are prepared for the 21st century. Despite the shockingly cold water, Masterson found comfort knowing there were paramedics on the scene and a hot tub to warm up in afterwards.
When asked if she would do it again, Masterson expressed mixed feelings, stating she might be persuaded by the community support but was unsure if she wanted to repeat the experience. The Laptop Loon-a-Tics name was derived from the team’s brainstorming, and Masterson joked about the event being labeled as the “first-annual plunge.” Overall, the fundraiser was a success, showcasing the strong community spirit and dedication to enhancing education at Lino Lakes Elementary.
