Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre still owes the state of Mississippi nearly $730,000 in welfare money that was improperly spent on projects he supported, according to state auditor Shad White. White filed court papers demanding repayment after Favre received and later repaid $1.1 million in state welfare money that was misspent. Favre is accused of accepting federal funds for a project to renovate a volleyball arena at the University of Southern Mississippi, his alma mater. He has repaid $1.1 million in two installments, but still owes $729,790 in statutory interest.
White criticized Favre for thinking he was entitled to an interest-free loan using taxpayer money intended for the benefit of the poor. Favre filed a defamation lawsuit against White in February 2022, which is ongoing. He has not faced criminal charges in this matter.
Favre is a former NFL star who played 20 seasons in the league, mostly with the Green Bay Packers. He won one Super Bowl with the team in 1997 and also played for the Atlanta Falcons, New York Jets, and Minnesota Vikings. He finished his career with impressive passing and touchdown statistics. Favre’s involvement in the mismanagement of welfare funds has come to light in recent years, leading to the demand for repayment from the state of Mississippi.
