Mississippi Food Network Launches Thanksgiving Turkey Drive to Support Those in Need
JACKSON, Miss. — As the holiday season approaches, the Mississippi Food Network is gearing up for its annual turkey drive, aiming to assist families in need during Thanksgiving. Last year, the initiative successfully collected over 1,000 turkeys and raised more than $15,000 to support local communities.
Charles Beady, the CEO of the Mississippi Food Network, emphasized the critical need for assistance during this time. "With Thanksgiving on the horizon, many in Mississippi won’t have turkeys or a proper Thanksgiving meal. This project ensures we can provide turkeys to those who otherwise wouldn’t have them," he stated. Currently, approximately 600,000 residents face food insecurity in Mississippi, going to bed hungry or uncertain about where their next meal will come from.
Despite being categorized as a low-income state, Beady expressed gratitude for the generosity of the Mississippi community. "Mississippi may struggle economically, but it is also a state filled with compassion and goodwill. We cherish the generous outpouring of support we receive during the Thanksgiving season," he remarked.
To kick off this year’s efforts, the 16 WAPT news team will broadcast live from the Kroger store located on I-55 in Jackson during the 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. shows, encouraging viewers to donate. Additional collection sites for turkeys include Kroger locations on Highway 51 in Madison, the Spillway in Brandon, and Byram.
The Mississippi Food Network invites everyone to participate in this vital initiative, ensuring that no one in the community has to face the holiday season without a meal.
