Entergy Mississippi Observes Utility Scam Awareness Day
Jackson, MS – November 20, 2024 – In recognition of the ninth annual Utility Scam Awareness Day, Entergy Mississippi has teamed up with Utilities United Against Scams (UUAS) to raise public awareness about utility impostor scams. These scams involve fraudsters posing as utility workers to extract sensitive financial information by threatening service interruptions or demanding immediate payments.
This year’s campaign, themed “Anytime, anyone, anywhere,” highlights the importance of vigilance among all customers, regardless of age or demographic. While sophisticated digital scams have risen, traditional in-person and telephone impostor scams remain prevalent.
“Utility scams have become increasingly sophisticated, using various tactics to mislead consumers. We urge all customers to practice caution as anyone can fall victim to these scams,” stated Robbie Kemp, vice president of customer service at Entergy Mississippi.
As part of UUAS, Entergy Mississippi works to inform customers about common scams and has successfully shut down over 14,830 scam-related toll-free numbers through collaborative reporting efforts.
UUAS Executive Director Monica Martinez emphasizes the necessity for customers to verify any unusual requests from utility companies before making payments, highlighting that all age groups are susceptible to these fraudulent tactics. Scammers typically prey on the elderly but increasingly target diverse demographics.
Customers are reminded that legitimate utility companies will never request payments via pre-paid debit cards, gift cards, or cryptocurrencies, and they will always provide multiple notifications before any service disconnections.
If customers suspect they have fallen victim to fraud, they should contact Entergy at 1-800-ENTERGY (1-800-368-3749) and local authorities. For further details and protection tips, visit entergy.com/scams, and follow Entergy Mississippi on social media using #StopScams.
